May 2016 Indycar IS 100 Years Old and It Shows

Can you feel the buzz in the media from the exciting finish to the recent Indycar season? No? You are not alone. Even the remaining fans seem to have gone quiet. The season didn't end, it died. The final race that featured a not-so-close race between Penske teammates drew a disinterested .34 TV rating.

Even the super fans that discuss their favorite openwheel series at TrackForum.com voted the last race 5 or lower on a scale of 1 to 10. That amounted to 70% of the responders to the thread. Overall, even they were less than thrilled with the season's ending.

But why would they be? Most of the current Indycar fans get so worked up for the one race in May they are flaccid by mid-June. It's no wonder why the season limps to an end in mid-September.

So, with the season over it was time for the big formal celebration awards ceremony. Held at a theater in Indy, it was hardly a packed house. Images make it look like a friends and family affair.

And that says so much. Friends and family, mom & pop…apple pie, the water slow on the Wabash and the race series 98% of America has left behind.

So good luck to…um, who won the championship? Oh yeah, French Driver and former Champcar driver Simon Pagenaud. He's the one kissing the dog in the graphic this month. Smack couldn't find an image of him kissing the trophy girl. However, kissing the dog does make sense.

A Tribute to Cam Gibbons

The Aussie Race Fan of American Openwheel Racing...would tell you what he liked and what he didn’t in that very special Aussie way.

This forum is dedicated to the memory of Cameron “Smacked” Gibbons. Cam, who went by the forum handle “Smacked” and had the Clash/Joe Strummer album cover avatar was one of the originators of a racing forum named SMACKForum that was opened for business back in 2007.

Cam unfortunately had a life fight with cancer that sadly took him from us late in 2011. Since the original SMACKforum was controlled by Cam there was no way to gain control of the forum site and web addressing.

Early this year, a group of SMACKforum members decided to start up another forum based on some of the same sensibilities that made “Cam’s place” home for many a disgruntled American Open Wheel racing fan. It was only natural that the new forum be named in some way for Cam, so why not make SMACKforum SMACKEDforum to keep both a lineage and a nod to Cam’s nickname of Smacked.

Cam this place is for you! And, we know you would tell all us to go fuck ourselves...some more than others. We miss you!
